Food Safety and your government

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a “center” called CFSAN.

Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is one of six product-oriented centers, in addition to a nationwide field force, that carry out the FDA’s mission.

“Specifically, CFSAN is responsible for promoting and protecting the public’s health by ensuring that the nation’s food supply is safe, sanitary, wholesome, and honestly labeled. The Center has over 800 employees.” Wholesome, if CFSAN were ensuring wholesome, why is their so much junk food? Does CFSAN promote those chemical snack cakes with palm kernel oil? It’s honestly labeled that there’s chemicals that I can’t pronounce.

Why is the head of CFSAN a Veterinarian? Dr. Sundlof is a D.V.M. and a Ph.D. The positions at CFSAN are appointed. But a vet? We are people, not animals. This is not pet food but food we put in our mouth every day. I guess that explains the junk food.

One would hope that with the concern about food, and melamine and allergens and e.coli, CFSAN would have thought to hire an M.D. not a D.V.M? I wouldn’t go to my local animal hospital if I were sick.

Bill Maher or Lou Dobbs, I’ll give this one to you.

Food Safety, it just keeps getting better. You can check out an article about US Food Safety in today’s Washington Post at
