Costco, Starbucks and McDonalds have cage-free eggs news this week. In two separate articles, these companies discussed their challenges in getting to their cage free goals.
Costco, the largest seller of cage-free eggs in the world, said that despite criticism by animal-rights groups of not being completely cage-free like they promised in 2007, they sold a record number of cage-free eggs.
In 2015, Costco sold 2.9 billion eggs and 763 million were cage free.
The Humane Society of the United States has been putting pressure on the wholesaler for months.
Paul Shapiro, the Humane Society’s Vice President told FOXBusiness.com back in August that [Costco] made a promise to go cage-free in 2007 and all they want them to do it follow through with it.
While cage-free is growing, other consumers can’t afford to pay a premium price for cage-free and organic eggs.
Starbucks says all of its eggs will be cage-free by 2020. This news assigns an eagerly awaited target date to the coffee chain’s pledge to buy more humanely raised eggs, the largest part of the new “Animal Welfare-Friendly Practices” plan Starbucks announced at Christmastime; it’s a program the Humane Society immediately praised as “the most comprehensive animal welfare policy of any national restaurant chain.”
McDonald’s is giving itself a decade to transition to cage-free eggs.
Both companies have been working to make the switch happen for a while — Starbucks since 2008, and McDonald’s since 2010. Starbucks says it’s finally at the point where it’s made “significant progress” with farmers, enough to pledge to be entirely cage-free by 2020.
