School officials closed Timony Grammar School in Methuen Friday due to a stomach virus, according to a school district statement.
Timony is the only school in the district that is closed.
Methuen School District Superintendent Judith Scannell told the Boston Herald 142 students were out sick Wednesday, and 186 students and 32 teachers were out sick Thursday.
“We have closely watched the attendance over the last 24 hours and it is clear that a virus is going through the building rapidly,” said the statement, which was posted on the district’s website Thursday night.
The district consulted the health department, district nurse, and administrators before deciding to close the school, according to the statement.
“There will be a complete and thorough cleaning of the building over the long weekend,” the statement said.
Timony Grammar School serves children in grades pre-K through 8.
