The city of Boston Inspectional Services Department shut down a Stop & Shop supermarket because of unsanitary conditions.

Officials from the Inspectional Services Department told 5 Investigates’ Karen Anderson that a customer filed a complaint on Friday. Inspectors visited the store on Blue Hill Avenue in Roxbury the same day and found evidence of mice and poor conditions.

The store was advised to clean up, but officials said a follow up inspection on Monday showed that their instructions had been ignored.

Officials said that in the bakery area of the store mice had eaten through bags of food. They also found a sticky trap with a dead mouse in it.

“Regardless of the reasons, the conditions at this Stop & Shop store location are our responsibility,” wrote Phil Tracey, Stop & Shop spokesperson, in a statement. “We are cooperating with the Department and are making every possible effort to address the conditions and bring the store into compliance with our own high standards as quickly as possible.”
